High Voltage Control Module

High Voltage Electronics

Overview

Custom high voltage electronics for managing usage of a 600V battery pack for a vehicle powertrain on an electric racecar designed by the University of Toronto Formula Racing team.

Context

High voltage management in an electric vehicle is essential for safety and reliability. The High Voltage Control Module features several safety features designed to meet FSAE regulations for vehicle safety during high voltage operation.

Key Features

  • Discharge: when the vehicle is in an unsafe/unknown state based on the shutdown circuit, normally closed discharge relays and resistors quickly bring the vehicle powertrain to a safe voltage.
  • Voltage Sensing: galvanically-isolated high voltage and low voltage sensing circuits determine when the powertrain reaches high voltage.
  • Status Indicators: logic circuits drive status lights of various colours to indicate vehicle voltage.
  • Shutdown Circuit: high voltage safety peripherals are incorporated with harnesses to meet regulations.
