Vehicle Data Acquisition System

Vehicle Data Acquisition System

Low Voltage ElectronicsEmbedded Firmware

Overview

Custom low voltage data acquisition system on an electric racecar designed by the University of Toronto Formula Racing team.

Context

Sensor data is critical for improving vehicle performance, enabling race engineers to optimize vehicle setup and validate design decisions under varying operating conditions.

Custom data acquisition electronics were designed by a teammate to power vehicle sensors, accurately obtain analog data, and relay information to the engineers. I was responsible for electronics bring-up, harness manufacturing, and system integration.

Key Features

  • Electronics: power regulation, signal conditioning (filter, buffer), Teensy 4.1 microcontroller
  • Harness: shielded sensor harnesses for damper pots, strain gauges, coolant loop (temperature, flow rate, pressure) sensors
  • Firmware: ADC sensor readings sampled at 100 Hz, data sent over CAN (2.0 A, 1 Mbps)
  • Enclosure: 3D-printed enclosure to protect electronics from debris
